About this watch
Description
It is a little known that Jaeger-LeCoultre, in addition to producing movements for its own watches, has also produced movements for a number of famous watch houses such as Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, and IWC. In the early part of the 20th Century, Jaeger-LeCoultre even supplied bare movements to the great firm of Patek Philippe. Then as now, Jaeger-LeCoultre was considered one of the finest watchmakers in Switzerland.
Here we have a charming example of a gentleman’s 1955, 9ct dress watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre, in all original and lightly restored condition. The dial is original and unrestored, having had a very gentle spring clean by blowing and dusting only. The large 34mm case is in mint condition having had a very gentle and sympathetic clean and polish and the movement has been thoroughly cleaned, inspected and serviced and is now running strongly and accurately.
The Case
This watch has an especially attractive 9 carat solid yellow gold case, in superb condition, measuring 34mm in diameter, not including the crown. Inside the case-back, all is present and correct with two U.K. hallmarks with “9K 0.375” and signed ‘DTE’ the mark of De Trevars who were the British importers and case-makers for JLC during the 1950s and 1960s, much like Dennison for Rolex and Omega. This watch has obviously been very well cared for as there are no dings, scratches or marks visible to the naked eye. The case-back has no wear and still presses back with a very satisfying click. The London hallmarks confirm the date of the watch as 1955.
Please note, vintage watches should never be assumed to be water-proof and should be kept clean and dry at all times.
The Dial
The amazing, beautiful, untouched dial is in superb original unrestored condition. The colour is a kind of light sage – honey with only a few spots at around 8 on the dial and minimal signs of ageing. It is signed Jaeger-LeCoultre and “Swiss Made”. Applied gilt numerals and batons mark the hours, along with the beautiful original ‘dauphine’ hands all in mint condition. The overall look is one of originality, simplicity and elegance. The lens is clear having recently been replaced.
The Movement
This is the all original high quality 17 jewelled, P800/C hand wind movement signed Jaeger-LeCoultre Co and ‘Fab Suisse’ and Swiss along with serial number 1162740 dating this watch to 1955. It has just been serviced and is incredibly clean. It is also running strongly and keeping accurate time, within plus or minus 12 seconds per day, which is well within expected parameters. The watch has a runtime of 44 hours from its fully wound state which shows the movement is particularly strong running and again, well within expected parameters.
The Strap
High quality brown croc grain padded leather strap which is very stylish and matches the watch perfectly. However, if you have a preference for another colour or style of strap we will do our best to oblige without any extra cost.
Box and Papers
Although there are no original papers with this watch, a detailed written receipt, and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The numbers on this watch match and date this watch to 1955 and will be quoted on your receipt for your security. The watch comes with a new high quality hardwood presentation box as shown.
The watch is sold on 14 days no quibble sale or return policy and with 12 months warranty.*
In Conclusion
This is a charming and totally original watch and even though it is almost 60 years old, it is still completely practical to wear as a daily watch. It is also an item of beauty, from one of the most prestigious names in Swiss watch-making. This example in such good original condition, will also make an excellent investment or heirloom piece, as well as be something to treasure and enjoy. As each year goes by and the world market for vintage gold JLC watches grows ever higher, limited supply and high demand from the Far East will mean prices will climb ever higher!
