About this watch
Description
Here we have a very rare, fully restored Rolex Precision Chronometer in Steel and Pink Gold from 1935. Rolex Precision Chronometers were fitted with the finest and most accurate movements made by Rolex at the time, however, relatively few were made, making these highly sought after today. At 26mm wide and 34mm in length, this is a good sized gents watch for the period.
The beautiful dial and steel and pink gold case have hints of the art deco style.
The Dial
The Champagne dial has a hint of pink about it which matches the case beautifully. The black Roman numerals and gold studs are very simple, clean and elegant. These are matched with the original, restored, silver ‘Index’ hands. The overall style of the dial with the subsidiary seconds dial is very typical of the 1930s and has lots of charm. The dial is signed with a black Rolex ‘Coronet’ at 12 with ‘Rolex Precision’ below.
This is the original dial which has been sympathetically restored to the very highest standards by our dial restorers, which are considered to be the best in the UK.
The Movement
This watch carries its original very high grade Rolex Extra Prima 18 Jewels, Chronometer movement, which as can be seen in the photographs, is in very clean condition. The movement has been fully overhauled and serviced which means it has been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected and rebuilt using original Rolex parts where required, by our vintage Rolex specialist watchmaker. When tested and calibrated, this watch was running to within +14 seconds per day, which is outstanding for any vintage watch of this age! The movement is all correctly signed ‘ROLEX CHRONOMETER’, ‘ROLEX EXTRA PRIMA’, ’18 RUBIES’,‘TIMED IN 6 POSITIONS’ and ‘SWISS MADE’.
As mentioned above, these Chronometer grade movements were the most accurate made by Rolex at the time and relatively few were made. This therefore, makes this watch very rare.
Please note – our 12 months’ warranty is only applicable if the full list price is paid.
The Case
The original steel and pink gold watch case measures 26mm x 34mm making this a typical sized watch for the 1930s. 26mm may sound a little small until one also consider the measurement across the diagonal is 39mm. The case is hinged at the rear for access to the movement and dial. The integrity of the hinge and case is excellent and the case opens and closes with a firm and satisfying click. Cosmetically, the case is in wonderful condition, considering the age of the watch. There is no damage, save for one or two very tiny marks, one on the rear of the case and one on the side, opposite the crown.
The inside of the case is correctly signed: Rolex, 31 Victories, De Haute Precision, Geneve, Suisse, with the Rolex SAR brand and the Rolex model number 3651. 31 Victories refers to awards won at major exhibitions and competitions for accuracy and reliability.
As ever, our standard advice applies: vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.
The Strap & Buckle
A new high quality, Hirsch ‘Regent’ strap has been fitted, along with a pink gold plated Rolex buckle. Please note, we feel the strap matches the watch nicely, however, if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin, however, we can also obtain most types and colours at short notice.
The Box and Papers
Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are correct, dating the watch to 1935.
A detailed ‘Particulars’ document will be included in the sale, along with our detailed receipt and 12 months Warranty*. A separate insurance valuation for the replacement value of this watch will also be provided at the time of sale, along with our unique ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ which states: “If at any time, this watch proves to be anything less than totally authentic, or not as described, Vintage Gold Watches of London will offer you a full refund at any time”.
The original vintage Rolex Precision vintage presentation box shown in the photographs is included in the sale. These often cost well over £200, when available.
In Conclusion
This is a first class example of a highly collectable and highly practical vintage watch from horology’s most famous name, which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to use, wear, treasure and enjoy! It will make an excellent evening wear dress watch as well as a practical and accurate and reliable timepiece to use on an occasional basis.
Vintage gold Rolex Precision watches are highly collected and the rarity of this watch means the value will always remain strong. This watch will make an excellent investment and family heirloom piece and even though vintage Rolex prices have risen markedly recently, we feel fine examples such as this still remain undervalued. As each year goes by and the world market for vintage watches expands, availability will become more limited so prices are surely destined to climb ever higher!
A word about our prices – We always try our hardest to acquire the very highest quality watches we can find, before restoring these to the highest possible standards. We then offer these at the fairest prices we can, taking into account our pre and post sales care and service. This approach inevitably means we will never be the cheapest, but nor will we be the most expensive. Indeed there are a number of well-known stores in West London which are very successful, charging between two to three times the price you see here. We therefore consider our prices to be fair, given the quality of watches we have to offer.
