About this watch

Longines

Longines is one of the oldest Swiss watch manufacturers with an unparalleled history of invention, innovation, patents and awards. The company is also responsible for some of the most beautiful watches ever made. Something of a Cinderella among the watch collecting fraternity until recently, Longines is now rightfully returning towards the elevated status it once held in the pre and post-war years when it ranked among the very best among of the Swiss watch manufacturers. It is really only within the past three years that Longines vintage watches have risen again to the admiration and popularity they deserve, with values rising of by around 15 – 20% per year and on certain models, such as the now legendary Longines Calibre.13ZN chronograph, prices have sky-rocketed.

Description

Here we have a wonderful example of typical Longines elegance and style in the form of a beautiful 14ct gentleman’s dress watch from c1950. Notable highlights of this watch are its beautiful and rare dial with restored ‘index’ hands, the subsidiary seconds dial around the centre of the dial, the wonderful case and its high grade Calibre 10L movement which is in stunning condition.

The Dial

The dial is in the classic Longines style, in that it is simple, clean, classy and understated. In fact, it is a wonderful example of a 1950s Longines. The beautiful ‘index’ style hands, matched with black roman numerals around the edge of the centre seconds dial, all on a silver background make this watch absolutely stand out.

Longines always seems to aim for and achieve dials that are that bit closer to perfection and does this so often and so effortlessly. Even the Longines signature looks more ‘in place’, which incidentally is the oldest registered of any watch manufacturer. Perhaps the evolution of a certain style became part of the company’s DNA, but Longines dials seem in a class of their own. This sense of style has certainly won Longines a great many loyal customers, who only later came to appreciate the accuracy and reliability of its movements.

This dial is original and unrestored and has been left untouched by our restoration team due to its superb condition. Usually, we restore the dials of the watches we sell, however we decided in this case to leave it alone, due to its unusually good condition and to retain its originality and charm for those who prefer this. It also helps to contrast with almost all of the other watch dials you see on our website, which have been restored. The hands, likewise, have also been left in their original untouched condition.

The Movement

The watch carries its original Longines Cal.10L hand-wound movement with a subsidiary seconds dial and bags of old world charm! Technically this is one of the classic, manually wound movements of its day, with 17 jewels, a large balance wheel running rate of 18,000 half beats per hour and a power reserve of 41 hours. It has every contemporary refinement.

The movement is signed ‘Longines Watch Co Swiss’ and ‘Seventeen 17 Jewels’ with the serial number 7101230 on the movement. The calibre number 10L, can also be clearly seen.

These movements are very highly regarded for their accuracy and reliability, making this watch perfectly suited for regular everyday use. This particular movement is in top condition and with regular servicing, every 3 to 4 years we would fully expect this watch to provide faithful service for many more decades to come! We are therefore pleased and confident to offer a 12 month warranty on this watch movement* and all servicing in the future.

*Please note – our 12 months’ warranty is only included if the list price is paid.

The Case

The 14ct watch case is of very high quality, made in New York by L&K Lutringer & Kammerer, case-makers for Longines Wittnauer, the American arm of Longines, St. Imier, Switzerland. This is a highly stylish case with a straight edge and slightly curved lens which gives the watch the perfect profile on your wrist. It also has stunning ‘rococo style’ lugs which give this watch extra flare and uniqueness. The case is made in solid 14ct yellow gold and has been exceedingly well cared for, being free from any scratches, dings or engraving.

At 25mm in width, excluding the unsigned crown, 29mm in length, 43mm including the lugs and 35mm diagonally, this is a large-sized watch case for the period. This may seem like a small case size, but it is actually considerably large due to the diagonal measurement. Inside the case-back is signed ‘Cased and Timed in USA by Longines’ with 14ct hallmarks and 14K Gold with the L&K initials denoting this is a Lutringer & Kammerer case. The Longines model reference number 3251 is also shown. The case has been cleaned and lightly polished and is in superb condition showing only the very slightest signs of wear.

Please note – as ever, our standard advice applies: vintage watches should be kept clean and dry at all times.

The Strap & Buckle

The watch is fitted with a high quality black leather strap and a plain gold-plated buckle. However, if a different colour or style of strap is preferred, please let us know and we will do our best to oblige free of charge. We carry tan, conker, dark brown and black in stock in plain padded leather, crocodile skin or lizard skin. We can also obtain most types and colours at short notice.

The Box and Papers

Although there are no original papers with this watch, all the numbers and markings on the watch are correct, dating the watch to c1950.

Detailed particulars will be included with our purchase receipt for your interest and security. A separate insurance valuation for the replacement value of this watch will be provided at the time of sale along with our unique ‘Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee’ which states: “If this watch proves to be anything less than 100% genuine, authentic and original, a full refund will be given at any time”.

The watch comes complete with a high quality hardwood presentation box, as shown.

In Conclusion
