About this watch

Description

Here we a have superb large example of the classic gentleman’s 1950s 17 Jewel Omega in 9ct yellow gold, and in fully restored, mint condition. This watch contains the Omega flagship Calibre 266 version of the famous Omega ’30mm’ series hand wound movement. First produced in 1939 this movement helped establish Omega as an ‘invincible’ watchmaker by continually winning top prizes for accuracy and reliability during its production span of 25 years.

The Dial

Simply stunning! Yellow gold on two tone lemon and white, cross hairs and classic 50’s Subsidiary Seconds dial at 6 o’clock. This a most impressive and attractive dial complimented with yellow gold Dauphine hands and matching arrow head batons. Just wonderful!… The original dial has been restored to the highest standards and now looks as new. The hands are are also in perfect condition as is the lens.

The Case

This watch has obviously been very well cared for and used sparingly. The beautiful 9ct solid yellow gold case has swept back lugs which raises the case slightly on the wrist and emphasises its presence. At 34mm diameter not including the Omega crown, this is a large sized watch for the period. Inside the case-back all is as should be found, signed Omega Watch Co and 13332 with 9ct hallmarks with 9 and .375. This case was made in England by Dennison for Omega and is marked as such. Dennison was a large supplier of cases to many Swiss watch manufacturers at the time. The case has been professionally cleaned and lightly polished and is in superb condition showing only very minimal signs of wear.

The Movement

This is the original 17 Jewel Calibre 262 hand wound movement, in sparkling ‘as new’ condition, signed Omega, SWISS, 266, 15132787 and 17 JEWELS. The serial number dates the watch to early 1956.

Notably the Calibre 262 movement is perfectly designed and ideally proportioned for superb accuracy and reliability. The piece has every luxury feature that one could possibly imagine, including a very complex and ingenious 7 stage mainspring evolution system that gives the watch an impressive 42 hour power reserve.

This watch has been very well maintained and we have just given it a full inspection, overhaul and service and we are therefore very happy to offer the watch with a 12 months warranty* With care and with regular servicing, say every 3 to 4 years we would fully expect this watch to run quite happily for another lifetime! Our watchmaker commented that he found the movement to be particularly clean and confirmed it has been properly maintained. Following the service he regulated the watch as usual. And when we made our final checks including testing the watch for accuracy on our electronic test instrument we found the watch to be keeping time within 10 seconds per day.

The Strap & Buckle

A high quality dark brown padded leather strap is fitted with an Omega gold plated buckle. If you have a preference for another colour, or a different style of leather we will be pleased to change it for you.

The Box and Papers

There are no original papers with this watch. However the numbers and markings on the watch are all correct and date the watch to 1956. A detailed written receipt, warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The watch will be supplied in the new high quality hardwood presentation box as shown.

In Conclusion

This really is a magnificent vintage gold watch from Omega, the most famous watch manufacturer in the world. It is to the credit of the company that this watch is still perfectly accurate, useable and reliable, just as it was when it left the factory 57 years ago!

So this a rare (particularly in this condition), notable and highly collectable vintage gold watch from one of horology’s most famous names which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!
