About this watch

Description

Here we have a simply wonderful Rolex Oyster Perpetual 18K Automatic, model ref 6090, so-called “Bombay” by collectors, referring to the bombé (sculpted) lugs on the case. The watch has been very lightly used and the sought after original honeycomb dial is in such wonderful original condition we feel it is far too good to restore. This makes this particular Rolex Oyster Perpetual ‘Bombay’ very rare and very special, and significantly adds to its value. The high grade Cal.645, Certified Chronometer Grade (highly accurate and highly reliable) automatic movement has been fully restored using only original parts as required. The watch case has been carefully polished, just enough to bring it back to top original condition.

The Dial

Very rarely do we find a watch with an authentic, original, unrestored dial which looks as good as this. It is in what we call “top original condition”. By this we mean very close to ‘as new condition’ but unrestored. As you may know, 50 or 60 years old watch dials which have not been restored, will always show signs of ageing, in the form of fading, pitting, freckling or discolouration. And certainly an original dial made in 1950, would usually show some significant deterioration in the form of one or more of these. This dial here however, is so clean and bright it almost defies belief, particularly for a honeycomb dial. If one were to be hypercritical there is some minor colour inconsistency which can only be seen if the light is just right, and if anything this adds too, rather than detracts from the watch. The classic ’50s design of guilt spearhead hour markers and ‘Dauphine’ hands over the white Honeycomb Dial all combine to make this a highly elegant dial and a very special watch.

The Case

This original Swiss hallmarked 18K solid gold case, measures 33.5mm in diameter not including the original Rolex ‘Super Oyster’ crown. The beautiful ‘bombe’ design case with smooth sculpted lugs has an unmarked smooth bezel and highly polished full thickness case-back showing it has never been inscribed. In fact all of the case is in immaculate condition having simply been professionally cleaned and very carefully polished. Between the lugs at 12 o’clock is the clearly defined model number ‘6090’ and this ties in with the same model number found on the inside of the case-back. And between the lugs at 6 o’clock is the serial number of the watch ‘7300xx’ is very clearly defined, indicating the year of manufacture as 1950, making this watch an early example. Inside the case-back are two Swiss 18ct hallmarks and 0.0750 18K. Also the beautiful, older, Rolex scroll GENEVA SWISS ROLEX PATENTED and the model number 6090.

The Movement

This watch has the original high grade “Officially Certified Chronometer” 20 Jewels, Calibre.645 automatic movement which is highly regarded for being particularly accurate, reliable and strong. The movement is working perfectly following a thorough overhaul and service by our watchmaker. It is signed ROLEX PERPETUAL CHRONOMETER and SWISS MADE. The movement carries the correct movement numbers F37378 and 080888. The movement has been calibrated and timed and is running strongly and accurately at ± 15 seconds per day and it is now ready for many more years of reliable service. The watch is offered with twelve months warranty on the movement*. *The 12 months warranty is only applicable if the Buy It Now price is paid.

The Strap and Buckle

The strap fitted is a new very high quality dark brown ‘croc’ leather strap. The strap is fitted with a matching Rolex gold plated buckle. Note, if a different colour or different style strap is preferred please let us know and we will do our best to oblige one free of charge.

A detailed written receipt, with a 12 months warranty* and a separate insurance valuation for the replacement value will be provided at the time of sale. The Rolex presentation box shown in the photographs is included in the sale.

*Note 12 months warranty is only applicable if the full list price is paid.

In Conclusion

This is a superb early example the iconic gent’s early 1950s vintage Rolex in 18ct gold and in immaculate condition. It is particularly special for having kept its original honeycomb dial in such superb condition. It is a completely practical and ready for wear as an everyday watch. And treated carefully it will be an excellent investment or heirloom piece, particularly when kept in such superb condition. And even though vintage gold Rolex prices have risen recently, we still feel good examples such as this are undervalued. As each year goes by and the world market for vintage gold Rolex watches continues to expand, prices are climbing ever higher. So this is a highly collectable vintage gold watch from horology’s most famous name which will provide an excellent financial investment as well as something to treasure and enjoy!
